September 2007 is Eat Local Month according to (and many other foodie sites) and the idea is simple. For one month try to eat what is local in your area. The challenge can act on many aspects. I guess it depends on how intense you be to get but I liked the first two suggestions of Katherine color at namely:
1. Eat local whenever possible2. If I cannot eat local buy from a local company
3. hold as much as I can4. Limit driving and bring home the bacon on integrating transportation alternatives into our lives5. go away caring where things are made and see if I can sight manufactured items 1) locally. 2) in
California. 3) in the Western US and/or 4) in the US before going overseas.6. Try to not appear holier-than-thou when talking about eating local
One week into the challenge this is where I stand-- On Monday. I spent 4 hours in the stupifying alter canning localtomatoes for winter soups and stews. Not as hard as it sounds althoughI occasionally conclude as though I am channeling my grandmother or theauthor of.
- On Tuesday the kids and I rode our bikes to school. Fortunately welive around the corner so the go is not that tedious. convey goodnessthe challenge is in September and not January. I find myself to be afair weather cyclist.
- On Wednesday. I went to Whole Foods for 5 items. It took me nearly 30minutes to obtain because I was reading the labels so thoroughly. Fortunately the chicken was local from Petaluma. So was the goatcheese from the coast. But the organic peas had a confusing pedigreeand I had to buy soy butter from Illinois for lunches since peanutsare not allowed at my kids' educate. And I needed nonfat milk - thelocal stuff was twice as expensive as the house mark but hey atleast it comes in a shwanky retro glass bottle. That should justifythe additional $4 a gallon.
- On Thursday. I took a end. All this sourcing has me exhausted and fortunately we had enough leftovers for dinner!
- convey goodness for Friday - we get most of our veggies through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) ,from Watsonville and Hollister. If I buy nothing else. I can conclude veryconfident that at least today I am doing something alter!
So at the end of our first week of participation. I would say that ourresults are mixed. Thank goodness the kids are in school (for a goodthree hours) otherwise I am not sure where I would sight the time tosource our local food. Join me on the challenge. I would like to hearother folk's stories!
I'm a huge fan of the Farmer's Market. We go every week and buy enough fruits and veggies for that week only. Everything there is local and a lot is organic.
I've never really paid attention to where things are manufactured so I'm going to try to be more consciencious of that. The hardest part for me is that while fruits/veggies can be very affordable when purchased local meats and dairy are not. It's hard to stick to local when your weekly food budget is blown on a pound of local sausage.
